In a recent development signalling a shift in administrative responsibilities, the Building Research Establishment (BRE) has announced that NABERS UK will be seeking a new administrator as the 2020 license agreement draws to a close. This transition comes as BRE redirects its focus towards further enhancing its globally renowned BREEAM system.

The collaborative relationship between BRE and NABERS will persist even during this transition period. Both entities are committed to sharing expertise, acknowledging the correlation between NABERS ratings and the BREEAM credit system.

Efforts are underway to ensure a seamless transition to a new administrator for NABERS UK, prioritising continuity and minimising disruptions for all stakeholders involved. While BRE will no longer be the administrator for NABERS UK, they express their dedication to maintaining a positive working relationship with the incoming administrator.

Gillian Charlesworth, CEO of BRE, highlighted this shift, stating, “After three successful years, BRE will no longer be the administrator for NABERS UK so that our team can focus all of their energy on making the next iteration of BREEAM the most successful yet.”

Charlesworth further emphasised the collective objective shared between BRE and NABERS, aiming to enhance sustainability within the built environment for the betterment of our planet.

Magali Wardle, acting director of NABERS, expressed gratitude to BRE for its pivotal role in NABERS UK’s success thus far. Wardle affirmed their commitment to ensuring consistency for customers throughout the transition process. Additionally, NABERS plans to unveil the Expression of Interest process for a new administrator shortly, anticipating continued growth for NABERS UK and its positive impact on the UK’s commercial building sector.

The Better Buildings Partnership (BBP), an advocate for NABERS UK, sees this transition as an opportunity to further advance energy efficiency in commercial buildings. Sarah Ratcliffe, CEO of BBP, commented, “The Scheme has already made a significant impact on the industry, and we look forward to the appointment of a new administrator who can capitalise on the opportunity to operate and scale-up this market transformational scheme.”

Stay tuned for updates regarding the new administrator for NABERS UK. Detailed information, including the Expression of Interest process and Q&A sessions for scheme stakeholders, will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
